Focus on Digital Cameras - did you know?
October 8th 2007 23:10
The opening shot here is from Getty images and it is a good photograph.
Notice the aerial view and how it captures the people sitting in rows with their uniform white hats and the occasional umbrella. Notice the juxtaposition of the people.
But, what you need to know is more about digital cameras.
The term digital has come to be synonymous with no-film cameras but even professional photographers rely on inbuilt chips in their computers thus making their cameras digital but usually with film, and so the use of the word digital in this narrow defintion of film-less cameras is a little ridiculous, but that's the way things to.
Incidentally, it is my mate who is the photographer, not me, although I do use cameras and do take photographs and know the rudiments of composition.
It is my mum who is the photographer in our household, just put a camera in her hands and her alter ego takes over and she becomes barely recognizable as off she goes. Woe betide any of us who would dare to challenge her on this one.
But, I digress, you want to know more about your digital cameras and what you need to know when buying one.
Surprisingly resolution is not all that important but zoom capacity IS.
OK, now, what is resolution? Resolution as applied to photography virtually means the fineness of detail that can be distinguished in an image
Without going into lengthy explanations, 5- or 6-megapixel resolution is generally as much as you'll need but you will never regret having more optical zoom.
Buy from a store which gives you good information and service, don't take from them and then race off to the el-cheapo place which gives you nothing but saves you a few bucks.
Travellers need a camera that uses AA batteries. You can always have these on stand by or buy anywhere in the world so you'll never be grounded with a camera that won't work, wherever you are.
Small cameras can get shots that larger cameras can't. Keep it in your pocket and whip it out every time you see that special shot. Finger clicking ease, so to speak.
Canon cameras are fantastic and Kodak cameras are easy to use. Canon wins the reviews over and over again, while Kodak suits beginners but can also produce lots of professional images especially if you move up from their most basic products.
Digital cameras do break. If that happens and you have no reserves, you're up the creek without a paddle, or more specifically you're on the mountain without a view.
Don't put all your
You can edit your photos with www.picasa.com. That program is free and not nearly so difficult to use as some of the other more professional ones.
So now you can photo, edit and PRINT your photographs.
You can put your images on T shirts, mousepads, you can even use them as screen savers.
And of course, feature them on your blog.
If you let me know a bit more about what you think you need to know or have some short story re your own photographic efforts to share I'm sure we'd all love to hear them.

I think there must be something wrong with the camera's inner bits, of which I know nothing, for it to produce images that are so warped. It must be pixels, or axles or some such.
Do you have a solution for this particularly problematic problem of mine?
