Hydrogen cars, run out, but still run.

When Alex Nu-ez ran out of fuel on his way to work in Greenwich the other day, he did absolutely nothing - and still got to his destination on time.
He was driving a BMW 7 Series sedan that runs on both liquid hydrogen and regular gasoline, an alternative fuel car of the future being tested by the German automaker.
When it runs on hydrogen, the car gets up to 150 miles on a full tank and emits no fossil fuel exhaust, only water vapor from a pair of vents on the undercarriage. As Nu-ez would learn, the car automatically switches over to regular gas power when its 8 kilogram hydrogen tank is empty and can go another 300 miles.
"It's a cool concept. It's pretty impressive the way it's put together," said Nu-ez, who is an associate editor of Autoblog.com and Autobloggreen.com, Web sites devoted to cars, in his spare time.
The Trumbull resident works in the information technology department for Greenwich-based Nestle Waters North America.
Advertising itself as being powered by hydrogen with iridescent lettering on the doors, the car is one of 100 built by BMW, 22 of which are being test driven by celebrities, journalists, environmentalists and car reviewers in the U.S.
